Dear Scholars,
It gives us immense pleasure to welcome you to Kontigence – Politically Incorrect 2.0.
Debating is a lot of things, but above all, it’s an amazing intellectual challenge. New, exciting challenges is what Kontigence is all about. This is the second debate Kontigence is hosting. Last year, we hosted the first edition of Politically Incorrect and the response we got from the debating community was heartening! An amazing variety of brilliant debaters joined us, and greatly enjoyed the challenge of a novel debating format. We’re back this year with an even newer format and a challenge that we hope you’ll enjoy!
Politically Incorrect 2.0 is a unique opportunity for you to sharpen your skill as a debater and to have fun doing it. Debating brings together all the different ways of thinking about a problem. With Politically Incorrect 2.0, we split up debating into three key academic standpoints. Your arguments must be based off of the standpoint assigned to you for each debate. It’s a whole approach to debating, and we’re really excited to see where it takes us.
Let’s get debating!
Team Kontigence
Each participant will be assigned one of three roles- scientist, philosopher, and statistician. Each role represents an academic standpoint that the participant must adopt. That is, your arguments must use the assigned standpoint as a jumping off point. For example, the scientist would stress scientific principles & research over political arguments. The statistician can jump in anywhere, as long as the numbers support their stance. The philosopher will argue theory, steering away from circumstantial arguments. Your constructives must be based on, not composed of, your assigned standpoint. Any argument can be moulded to fit the role assigned to you.
This is an individual event. The debate will be a one-on-one interaction between participants. The debate will consist of a main speech and a rebuttal. Each speaker will have 5 minutes to make their main arguments and 2 minutes for rebuttals. No points of inquiry (POIs) or questions will be entertained during the debate.
There will be a preliminary round of debates after which the highest scoring participants will move forward. This will be followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals, where the winner of each round progresses to the next.
The debate will follow a one-on-one format the specifics of which shall be shared with the participants. For the preliminary round, participants will be randomly matched up with each other. The timing for each debate will be worked out by the moderator after consultation with both participants. The debate will be conducted on a zoom video call.
If you have any queries – regarding the guidelines, scoring metric or anything else – please send us an email at events@Kontigence.com. We will reply to them in less than 24 hours.
